What are the lessons General Counsel wish they’d known earlier in their careers? Drawing on insights from legal leaders across industries and geographies, we’ve identified nine themes that define what it really takes to succeed in-house today. This is the first in a 9-part series exploring those lessons – starting with a fundamental shift in how GCs create value.
1. Legal expertise is only the starting point
For many lawyers stepping into an in-house role, the instinct is clear: deliver technically perfect legal advice.
It’s how most legal careers begin – focused on precision, detail, and getting the answer exactly right.
But for General Counsel, that quickly proves to be only the baseline.
As the role evolves, so too does the definition of value. Legal expertise is expected. What differentiates high-performing GCs is not just their command of the law, but how they apply it in a business context -balancing risk with opportunity, and precision with pragmatism.
“Technical legal excellence is only the starting point.”
— Andre Margato Alves, Head of Legal & Compliance – Latam, JCB (Brazil)
The shift is subtle but critical.
Instead of asking “What is the legally correct answer?”, the more impactful question becomes:
“What is the best way forward for the business, within the bounds of the law?”
This is where influence is built – not in the perfection of analysis, but in its relevance to real-world decision-making.
“Real influence in law comes from timing, context, and communication.”
— Fatih Ozdemir, Legal and Regulatory Affairs Director, YASED International Investors Association (Türkiye)
To operate at this level requires more than legal knowledge. It demands commercial awareness, clarity of communication, and the ability to adapt advice to the realities of the business – its pace, its priorities, and its appetite for risk.
Ultimately, the most effective GCs are not those who simply interpret the law, but those who translate it into action.
Legal accuracy gets you in the room. Business impact keeps you there.
