Why trust is the foundation of every digital transformation

Markus Warmholz, Head of Corporate & International Legal Affairs and Legal Operations at Hartmann Group, explains why digital transformation fails without trust.

Digital transformation is a buzzword that’s easy to champion but difficult to deliver. AI tools, automated workflows, and centralised systems promise unparalleled efficiency, yet many organisations struggle to realise their potential. Why? Because they overlook a critical ingredient: trust.

As someone who’s overseen the implementation of tools like Legal Tracker, LawBuddy, and Intake & Matter Management, I’ve learned that technology alone doesn’t solve problems. Trust does.

The Trust Gap in Digital Transformation

Let’s unpack this. When a new tool is introduced, it’s not just about the tool’s functionality – it’s about whether people trust it to make their work easier, faster, or better. Without trust, adoption fails. Without adoption, transformation stalls.

“Technology doesn’t disrupt industries – trust does.”

When we introduced e-signatures at Hartmann Group the challenge wasn’t the tool itself. It was convincing teams and their business partners that electronic signatures were as secure and reliable as traditional ones. By educating stakeholders, demonstrating use cases, and addressing concerns upfront, we built the trust needed to drive widespread adoption.

Trust as the Invisible Infrastructure

Trust isn’t just about tools – it’s about people. Employees need to trust leadership to provide direction. Leaders need to trust their teams to deliver results. And customers need to trust that the organisation is operating ethically and effectively.

This ecosystem of trust is the invisible infrastructure that underpins every successful transformation. Without it, even the most advanced technology will fail.

How to Build Trust in a Digital World?

Building trust requires intentionality:

1. Transparency: Be upfront about the why behind every change.
2. Empathy: Address concerns and listen to feedback.
3. Consistency: Deliver on promises to reinforce credibility.

A Provocation for Leaders

Here’s a provocative thought: Technology doesn’t disrupt industries – trust does. If you’re leading a transformation, focus less on the tools and more on the trust they require.

Are you building a foundation of trust, or are you relying on tech to do the heavy lifting?
