What are the biggest external forces or trends currently shaping your role as General Counsel and how are you responding to them?

The biggest external forces shaping my role include the integration of artificial intelligence into business processes, data protection and compliance regulations such as KVKK and GDPR, as well as economic fluctuations and high inflation. In response to these trends, I focus on developing solutions that not only mitigate legal risks but also contribute to the company’s strategic goals. My ongoing master’s studies allow me to combine academic knowledge with practical experience, and through my legal writings, I stay up to date with industry developments. This enables me to provide a legal perspective that manages risks while actively supporting business growth.

How are you balancing the increasing demands of legal risk management with the expectation to drive business value and strategic insight?

I view legal risks not as obstacles that slow down business, but as opportunities that, when managed properly, can create competitive advantages. I proactively develop compliance processes for regulations like KVKK and GDPR, ensuring that the company not only avoids penalties but also builds a trustworthy brand image. In digitalisation and AI-related initiatives, I anticipate and manage legal risks to provide strategic solutions that add real value to the business. This approach allows me to maintain a balance between risk management and driving business growth.

What’s one lesson or insight from your in-house journey that you wish you’d known earlier and would share with a fellow GC today?

I have learned that law is not only about technical expertise, but also about trust, communication, and strategic thinking. Early in my career, I focused primarily on delivering the “perfect legal answer,” but over time I realised that considering business speed, commercial objectives, and digital transformation adds far more value. For example, engaging proactively in AI and data compliance processes not only prevents risks but also provides long-term benefits to the company. My advice to a fellow GC would be to integrate legal guidance as part of the business strategy and stay ahead of emerging trends.
