An interview with Milena Sbrana da Silveira, Head of Legal & Integrity at ABB in Brazil.
In what ways do you see the role of the GC changing over the next 5–10 years?
The role of the GC is becoming more integrated with the business than ever before. Over the next decade, GCs will be expected to anticipate risks rather than simply respond to them, to translate complex legal issues into practical business decisions, and to help leaders navigate uncertainty. The value of the GC will increasingly lie in judgment, perspective, and the ability to balance speed with responsibility in a fast-changing environment.
What qualities do you believe distinguish truly impactful GCs from good ones?
Impactful GCs understand law, people, context, and consequences. They are able to influence difficult conversations and trusted when decisions carry real risk. What truly sets them apart is sound judgment, credibility built over time, and the courage to speak up (especially when the answer is not what others want to hear).
If you could change one perception about the in-house legal profession, what would it be?
I would challenge the idea that in-house lawyers exist mainly to slow things down. At their best, in-house legal teams help the business move forward with clarity and confidence. The role is not about saying “no,” but about helping the organisation make informed, responsible decisions in complex situations.
