An interview with Lynette Lim, Chief Legal Officer at Sembcorp Industries Ltd in Singapore.
How would you describe the state of the GC Community in your region? How has it changed since you first moved in-house?
Whilst there has been a huge increase in the number of in-house lawyers with “GC” title in the past 5 years, I observe that it is more a case of elevated title and “juniorisation” of the role. And because there is such a wide spectrum of GC, the so-called GC Community out there is starting to have diminishing value to me personally and professionally.
Why is expanding your network important to you? What kinds of connections or discussions would be most valuable to you?
Rather than expanding my network, I am more interested in being selective and targeted in the network that I am involved in. The most valuable connections or discussions will be with firstly, senior GC and CLO who have strategic business positions (with legal competencies baked in), and secondly, C-suites and Directors to elevate my business acumen and gain further insights into the thinking of senior business leaders.
What do you want to achieve by collaborating with other GCs and senior in-house lawyers? Are there specific topics, challenges, or experiences you’d like to share or learn more about?
Sharing of best practices regarding (a) how best to perform the strategic role of CLO/GC in the boardroom, (b) modernization of legal and compliance department using AI (and not using AI for the sake of using AI), (c) driving changes in law firms’ service delivery and billing model.
