“I strongly believe in the value of collective problem-solving.”

An interview with Luis Felipe Garcia Carvajal, Senior Manager, Legal Counsel LATAM at DSV – Global Transport and Logistics in Mexico.

How would you describe the state of the GC Community in your region? How has it changed since you first moved in-house?

I’ve been working as in-house counsel since 2011, beginning my journey in Colombia before relocating to Mexico in 2018. In Colombia, I was fortunate to be part of a vibrant and collaborative GC community. I regularly attended cross-industry meetings, where we exchanged ideas, discussed evolving legal challenges, and built lasting professional connections. I was honoured to be recognised in the GC Powerlist 2016 as one of the most influential in-house counsel in the country – an experience that underscored the value of professional community and peer recognition.
Since moving to Mexico, my engagement with the GC community has changed – not for lack of opportunity, but due to the nature of my current role. Given the sensitivity of the industry I work in, particularly around competition issues, I often have to decline invitations to events where competitors might be present. That said, from what I observe, the GC community remains robust and highly active, continuing to foster dialogue, innovation, and support among peers. While I may not participate as actively now, I recognise and appreciate the critical role these networks play for many of my colleagues.

Why is expanding your network important to you? What kinds of connections or discussions would be most valuable to you?

Expanding my network is important for several reasons. First, staying connected with peers – especially those in the freight forwarding and logistics industry – helps me stay informed about emerging challenges and regulatory trends that are shaping our sector. Understanding how others are navigating these issues can offer fresh perspectives and potential solutions to apply within my own organisation.
Second, a broader network provides valuable market intelligence, including insights into new job opportunities or changes in the legal landscape – not just for myself, but also for talented professionals I’ve worked with or mentored. Networking is not only about individual growth; it’s also about lifting others and helping build pathways for career advancement across the legal community.

What do you want to achieve by collaborating with other GCs and senior in-house lawyers? Are there specific topics, challenges, or experiences you’d like to share or learn more about?

While there isn’t one specific topic I’m focused on, I strongly believe in the value of collective problem-solving. Collaborating with other GCs and senior in-house lawyers offers an opportunity to share common challenges, benchmark best practices, and brainstorm practical solutions in a confidential and trusted environment.
I’m also interested in continuing education – whether through diplomas, certifications, or curated training programs – and would value a network where such learning opportunities are shared and even co-created. Ultimately, I see collaboration as a two-way street: a space to offer insights from my own experience while learning from the diverse expertise of others.
