An interview with Enrique Silgado Venegas, Deputy General Counsel at TGP in Peru.
What are the biggest external forces or trends currently shaping your role as General Counsel and how are you responding to them?
3 main things spring to mind:
A) The development and right use of AI.
B) To focus on operation and cost efficiencies while providing A1 service.
C) Determine Key Performance Indicators to demonstrate the Legal Department’s value
How are you balancing the increasing demands of legal risk management with the expectation to drive business value and strategic insight?
We start to integrate our input to a number of issues to other departments. For instance, we are improving the contracts lifecycle management system (samples, market research for contracts platforms, etc). Also, we have a training schedule in several matters (focusing on previously identified issues in order to have a pragmatic approach). We also have an active role on different internal and external audits.
What’s one lesson or insight from your in-house journey that you wish you’d known earlier and would share with a fellow GC today?
To develop soft skills alongside technical skills since it is a critical skill for leadership roles. Moreover, to focus on basic financial matters as well as communication skills (regarding non lawyer clients).
